WHAT YOU WILL NEED

NOTE: If you are sending these measurements to us for a size recommendation, you will need a helper to photograph you taking the measurements on the dog. These photos help us understand your dog’s shape tremendously!

BEFORE YOU START

Measuring your dog for a muzzle requires significant handling of your pup’s face and using items, such as a measuring tape, that they may not have encountered before. If you have not previously handled your pup in this way, it may be a stimulating experience for them!

Take your time.
You may need to obtain these
measurements over multiple sessions or days.

We will be collecting the following measurements:

Nose Length
Nose Width
Head/Cheek Width
Head Length
Upper Neck Size
Closed Circumference
Mid-Pant Circumference
Mid-Pant Height
Full Pant Circumference
Full Pant Height

NOSE LENGTH

Measure starting 1/2” below the eyes to the tip of the nose.

Valie’s nose length is 3.25”.

HEAD/CHEEK WIDTH

Valie’s upper neck size is 14.5”.

PANT SPACE

The ideal muzzle is one that allows your pup to exist freely. Your pup should be able to fully pant, yawn, drink, and vocalize unrestricted.

In the next section, we’re going to gather measurements to help understand how much space your pup needs to be comfortable!

CLOSED CIRCUMFERENCE

Measure around your dog’s snout at the widest point while closed and in a relaxed position.

Valie’s closed circumference is 9”.

MID-PANT CIRCUMFERENCE

Take your pup for a quick jog around the yard. You can also use a smaller sized toy in/under the mouth for this measurement,

Measure around your dog’s snout at the widest point, near the end of the nose.

Valie’s mid-pant circumference is about 10.75”.

MID-PANT HEIGHT

Measure the distance from the top of your dog’s nose to the bottom of their jaw.

This is measured while the dog is in a relaxed pant or with a smaller sized toy in/below their mouth.

Valie’s mid-pant height is about 4.5”.

FULL PANT CIRCUMFERENCE

Engage your pup in heavy exercise or play. You can also use a medium to large sized toy in/below the muzzle if this is easier for you and your pup!

Measure around your dog’s snout at the widest point. You will want to measure near the end of the nose.

Valie’s full pant circumference is 15”.

FULL PANT HEIGHT

Measure the distance from the top of your dog’s nose to the bottom of their jaw. This is measured while the dog is in a full, extended pant or with a medium to large sized toy in/below their mouth.

Valie’s full pant circumference is about 6”.

WHAT DOES THE RIGHT MUZZLE LOOK LIKE?

The “right muzzle” might look a little different on every dog. At first glance, they may seem quite large... It should look this way! Remember, your pup should be able to move freely and express necessary behaviors such as yawning and vocalizing.

To help visualize, here are some examples of some great fitting muzzles!
